Update on my wine closet
Hey everyone, I figured I might update people as to the progression of my wine closet that I wrote an article about here. When I wrote the article me and my dad had just finished building it in an extra closet I had at my place (again thanks Dad). The whole thing was pretty simple then with a board and trim going accross to make a counter top (a surprisingly sturdy one at that) along with a few store bought wodden wine racks. This, combined with an existing shelf for my glasses, worked quite well for storing around 72 bottles of wine (not that I have that many but I'm getting there).
Since we finished this project though I have expanded the closet to hold more wine and be a bit more organized, as you can see in the pics below.

In the pic on the left (sorry for the poor quality pics, I did it myself) you can see my new rack arrangement with one rack actually on the counter (told you it was strong). This made room for the added wine cooler in the pic to the right. This added an additional 12 bottles to my capacity as well as a place to store my nicer wines. I also added the crappy old computer I got from work to hold a small database for my wine so I can record thing like when I bought the wine and my notes once I tasted them. Their is also space under the counter for storing wine boxes (full and empty) as well as the wooden wine crate on the counter which hold my wine accesories.
All this brings my capacity to some where around 100, when you include floor space, all kept organized with technology. Even with these additions the whole thing is still quite cheap, the wine cooler being the most costly by far (around 80 retail now). In total the whole project would run you about $100-120 and can be done with minimal skills. So go on and hit the stores and make one of your own, and if you do why not share some pics on here.

I'm pretty envious of your wine closet ecadmin. how many bottles do you have in there?
at last count I had 41 bottles in there.
Remember that the culprits to an imperfect wine storage are incorrect or insufficient heat, humidity and light. Make sure that light does not seep into your wine closet, cellar or refrigerator. It is also important to keep the temperature at a constant degree. For red wines, the ideal temperature is 10 to 18 degrees Celsius while white wines are best kept at 7 to 15 degrees Celsius. Better yet, consult the vintner or the person from whom you bought the wine to know the exact temperature range to store the wine.
Wine bottles should also be stored lying on their sides so that the cork can be kept moist - this is what keeps air away from the liquid. Once the cork is dry, the wine will be oxidized and lose its quality.
